Plenty of people find us by accident. They’re driving I-95 between Richmond and North Carolina, see the Skippers sign, and decide to see what a peanut store looks like. Many of those people come back on their next trip, and some make it a regular stop.
Our store sits about a mile east of I-95, off Exit 4, at 5300 Skippers Road. The building is older than we are. It dates back to the 1830s and served the community for generations as a general store and the longtime home of the Skippers Post Office. We moved in back in 1991, and it has been home ever since.
Before that, Good Earth Peanuts was a kitchen operation. When the company began in 1989, the family cooked peanuts at night on the kitchen stove after full days spent working other jobs. Peanuts were (and still are!) packaged by hand and sold to friends, neighbors, and local customers. Moving into the old store gave us room to grow, but we’ve tried to keep the same approach that got us started: patience, hard work, and knowing the people we sell to.
So what will you find when you walk in?
Fresh boiled peanuts. You can’t easily ship this one, so it’s one of the best reasons to stop. Warm, salty, and soft, they’re the classic Southern road snack.
The full lineup. The store carries a large selection of our products in one place. That includes salted and unsalted Virginia peanuts, our flavored peanuts, in-shell peanuts, brittle, chocolate-covered peanuts, and other nuts, along with our housemade peanut butter and the McCutcheon’s jams and preserves we carry beside it. It’s a good chance to see sizes in person and pick up something you haven’t tried.
Gifts ready to go. If you’re on your way to visit family, the store is an easy place to grab a gift basket, tin, or box without planning ahead.
A little Virginia peanut country. Southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina have been peanut country for nearly 200 years. Our store sits right in the middle of it, surrounded by the kind of land that grows the Virginia peanut variety best.
